John was a Sgt in Co I, 11th Ill Infantry.

John and his wife Jemima donated the land in 1881 where the Nichols Cemetery is located.

Obit:
Uncle Johny Nichols died at his home in Chicaskia Township last week. He was one of the early settlers of the county and had a wide circle of friends who most sincerely mourn his death. He was a veteran of the late war and in both private and public affairs was a model citizen.

Inscription

On the base is written:
Our father has gone to a mansion of rest
To the glorious land by the Deity blest
Beside the main marker is another smaller granite one that says Sgt Jho (sic) Nichols Co I 11 Ill (IL) Inf.
