Theodore spent the greater part of his life in Peabody. After attending public High School in Peabody, where he excelled academically, he attended Amherst College for one year, having won a scholarship exam. After that year, he transferred to Harvard College, graduating sixth in his class with highest honors in 1871. Next, he studied civil engineering at "the M.I.T." for a year before going to work for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Co. in Nebraska, locating some of that railroad's main lines.
He returned to Massachusetts and was elected librarian of the Peabody Institute (the public library) in Peabody, and served there from 1873 to 1880. During this time he studied law in a Salem law office. He was admitted to the bar in 1879, and opened an office in Salem. He was in general practice until he became clerk of Suffolk County Superior Court (civil cases) in 1888.
During the years that Theodore was Peabody's librarian and perhaps into the early days of his law practice he researched and wrote the History of Peabody, Massachusetts, a Definitive History of Peabody 1623-1880 that appeared in the 1888 comprehensive History of Essex County.
Meanwhile, he had married Soledad Alicia (Alice) Machado in 1882 at the South Church in Peabody where he served as organist. He was very musical as were his in-laws the Machados with whom he and Alice loved to sing.
