Surviving are two sisters, Sister Virginia Sweeney, BVM, of Mount Carmel, Dubuque, and Eileen Burds of Epworth; two brothers, Herb (Mary) Sweeney of Verona, Wis., and John (Ellen) Sweeney of Huntsville, Ala.; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Beatrice "Bea" Spiegel and Sister Serena Sweeney, BVM.
Monsignor Sweeney was born in Dubuque on Nov. 18, 1912, to Matthew L. and Clara R. Noesges Sweeney of Peosta. He graduated from Loras College and took his theological studies at St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati. He was ordained on June 7, 1941, at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque by Archbishop Reckman. Msgr. Sweeney's first assignment was as associate at Sacred Heart, Waterloo, where he stayed until he was assigned to Assumption, Cresco, in 1947. In May 1949, he was appointed administrator at Sacred Heart, Maquoketa, and in April 1951, received his first pastorate at St. Agnes Plymouth Rock. Msgr. Sweeney was appointed superintendent at Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, in 1956, and stayed there until being named pastor of St. Joseph's, Raymond, in 1960. He was appointed pastor of St. Patrick's, Ryan, in 1966 and St. John the Evangelist, Independence, in 1969. He was appointed dean of the Independence Deanery in 1967 and named a monsignor in 1974. Msgr. Sweeney served as pastor of St. Mary's, Guttenberg, from 1976 until his retirement to Villa Raphael in 1985. He was a member of the Guttenberg Knights of Columbus Council 4148 and Fourth Degree Dubourg General Assemby No. 1573.
A memorial may be given to Hospice of Dubuque in memory of the Rev. Monsignor Donald F. Sweeney.
