An Old Veteran Passes Away
Robert Harrison died Monday morning at one o'clock of heart failure, aged 75 years. He had been in fairly good health of late and his death was entirely unexpected.
He was at the Episcopal Church on Sunday night when Rev. Randall noticed that he looked pale and complained of feeling bad. Mr. Bainter accompanied him home. He seemed to be all right when going to bed about 11 o'clock. Mrs. Harrison was awakened about one o'clock by hearing a struggle and found him breathing his last.
Robert Harrison was born in Preble county, Ohio, January 26, 1823. His parents moved to Montgomery county, Ind. when he was 8 years old. He was married to Mary J Davidson at the age of 22. They had eight children from this union, 4 girls and 4 boys, all of whom are living except one son.
He moved from Indiana to Dallas county, Iowa around 1855. Hence he enlisted in the army on the 19th day of August, 1862, and served in the 39th Iowa infantry, Co. C. until the close of war being mustered out in June 1865. He saw hard service during the Atlanta campaign and was in some of the hardest fights of the war.
His first wife died on March 11, 1865 and he was married to Sarah Rickabaugh in October of the same year in Polk county, Iowa. To this union one child was born.
He came to Kansas about 1870 (1876?) settling near Lawrence from where he moved to Augusta in 1877 and has resided here until his death.
The funeral was held from the M E church of which he was a member, Wednesday afternoon, being conducted by L E King Post G A R and W R C., Rev N Asher preaching the sermon. The remains were laid in their last resting place in the city cemetery.
Following are the resolutions adopted by L E King post:
To the commander and comrades of L E King Post 105, GAR.
We, your committee appointed to draft resolutions, respectfully submit the following:
Whereas Death has taken from our Post a fine comrade, a brave soldier and a good citizen in the person of Robert Harrison and called him to the eternal camping grounds; where sorrow and sighing shall never come, where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest, therefore be it
Resolved that ---------- pathy of the comrades of L E King Post and Woman's Relief Corps No 27 be extended to the widow and children of our dear comrade, trusting that He who doeth all things well will be their hope and refuge in this their hour of affliction. Be it further resolved
That a copy of above resolutions be furnished to city papers, with request to print --- to the widow with children of our deceased comrade and that these resolutions be spread on the books of the Post.
