Wellington and Collingsworth County lost a longtime friend, public official and volunteer worker this week with the unexpected death of Jimmie Barber.

The popular civic leader died in an Amarillo hospital Monday evening of sudden complications following heart surgery last week.

Barber was due to be released from the hospital late Monday when a blood clot apparently formed and entered a lung, leading to his death.

He had undergone successful bypass surgery on arteries last week at the Amarillo hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in First Baptist Church.

Elder Demerson, pastor of First Church of God in Christ at Childress and Elder A.T. Anderson, will officiate. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors.

Rev. Barber had been employed by Ralph Owens for 15 years.

At the time of his death, he was serving as Collingsworth County Commissioner of Precinct 2, covering the northeast quarter of the county.

County Judge Zook Thomas said of Rev. Barber, "He was a good commissioner, he did us a good job. He was very cooperative in trying to work things out for the best interest of the county."

Other members of the commissioners court were also high in their praise of Rev. Barber's work with the court and his leadership in the community.

"He was real cooperative," Dan Langford said. "He was interested in the county and wanted something that would help the county be a better county."

"He was concerned about the finances, the fire department and the ambulance service."

"Farmers and ranchers often came to him to discuss the county's roads, and he frequently went out to personally take care of problems."

"He was a concerned commissioner and a citizen. The people of Collingworth County will miss him."

He was a pastor of Holy Sanctuary Church of God in Christ and was responsible for construction of the new building the church occupies.

Among his community activities, Rev. Barber was a member of the board of Collingsworth Volunteer Ambulance Service for several terms, and had been trained as an Emergency Medical Technician.

He belonged to the Progressive Men's Organization and was a reserve deputy in the Donley County Sheriff's Department.

He was on the planning committee for the reunion of Booker T. Washington Ex-Students Association.

In a related activity, he was involved in fund raising for the scholarship fund to benefit children of Booker T. Washington graduates. He spearheaded the benefit dinner in November.

Rev. Barber was born March 13, 1948, at Pampa, the son of Girtie Barber and the late Allen Barber.

He graduated from Wellington High School Class of 1967 and was a member of the Skyrocket athletic team.

Survivors are his wife, Emma Barber, one son, Jimmie Barber, Jr.; one daughter, Erma Barber, all of Wellington; his mother, Mrs. Girtie Barber, of Wellington; three brothers, Robert Allen Barber of Claude L. Barber, both of Phoenix, Arizona, Glenn Barber of Amarillo; four sisters, Elizabeth Dickey of Artesia, New Mexico, Florence Dyson of Los Angeles, California, Gwen Barber of Wellington and one grandson, Kyle Barber of Wellington.

Pallbearers include Danny Gray, Kevin Culpepper, Ivory Darton, R.L. Hunnicutt, Robert Coffee and Dudley Owens.

Honorary pallbearers are Arthur Dyson, Calvin Green, Sidney Jackson, Michael Hopkins, Ralph Owens, Robert Powell, Charles Rayford and Aaron Rayford.

Memorials may be made to the Amarillo Diabetes Association.
