She was the daughter of Charles Stuart, earl of Lennox (1555/6-1576), and his wife, Elizabeth (1554?-1582), daughter of Sir William Cavendish and his third wife, Elizabeth, nee Hardwick (from 1567 or 1568, by her fourth marriage, Elizabeth Talbot, countess of Shrewsbury).
