Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1839, opened a law practice in St. Joseph, Missouri and served as a Captain of a volunteer company in the Mexican War. From 1852 to 1857, he served as a Missouri State attorney for the twelfth judicial circuit and a member of the State House of Representatives. In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. At the start of the Civil War, President Lincoln commissioned him Brigadier General of the Missouri State Militia, serving until he resigned in 1865. After the war, he was the first president of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad and the first comptroller of Missouri.
