Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Licking County, Ohio, he as an attorney in Chicago, Illinois when the Civil War started and helped organize the 39th Illinois Infantry. He was commissioned as Colonel in January 1862, leading his regiment in the Eastern Campaigns and operations in South Carolina. In 1864, he was given command of the 1st Brigade of the XXIV Corps and was seriously wounded at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff on May 14 1864. After being released for duty, he led his brigade during the Siege of Petersburg and was promoted Brigadier General in the Regular Army on May 1, 1865. He resigned in September 1865, going on to serve as treasurer of Cook County, Illinois and as US Minister to Argentina, 1874 to 1885.
