Actor. Born in Birmingham, England, he made his stage debut at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1914 and began appearing in British films in 1931. American critics praised his performances in "The Private Life of Don Juan" (1934) and "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1935), and in 1936 he settled in Hollywood. A pudgy gent with a nasal voice and a look of permanent disdain, Cooper was most often cast as a snooty butler or ineffectual fop. His best roles were as the wimpy Sheriff of Nottingham in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), as Greer Garson's pompous suitor Mr. Collins in "Pride and Prejudice" (1940), and as the wedding planner who drives Spencer Tracy nuts in "Father of the Bride" (1950). Among his other films are "Rebecca" (1940), "The Lady Eve" (1941), "Random Harvest" (1942), "Love Happy" (1950), and "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956). Cooper was also seen on the Broadway stage and he devoted himself to the theatre exclusively after 1960.
