Blanche Leona Combs, 100, of Iola, Kansas died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at Allen County Hospital in Iola, Kansas.

She was born March 18, 1910, at the home of her parents, Floyd and Bertha (Volland) Squires.

She was formerly of rural Westphalia She attended a rural school at Steen and graduated from Westphalia High School in 1927.

With a normal training teacher's certificate she taught at Mount Joy rural school for three years and then at Cherry Mound in Anderson County for seven years. She attended Emporia Teachers College during summer seasons to renew her certificate.

On April 25, 1937, she married Carl Wesley Combs at the home of her parents. He husband died on Nov. 29, 1985.

They made their home on a farm west of Westphalia where she continued to live after his death. She stayed on the farm until February 2004 when she moved into The Meadows in Burlington, KS. She remained there until February 2009 when she moved to Iola and spent a year living with her grandson Brian and his family. After that time, she moved into Windsor Place where she lived until her death.

She is survived by a son, Glen and wife, Wanda, of Le Roy; a grandson, Brian Combs and wife, Jacey, of Iola, KS; two granddaughters, Victoria Crain and husband, Jim, of Columbus, KS, and Glenda Roberts and husband, Scott, of Harrison, A; six great-grandchildren and their spouses; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Thursday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Burlington, Kansas.

Memorials to Blanche Combs Memorial Fund will be split equally between the Iola High School Booster Club and Columbus High School Athletic Program and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
