He was a fifer in company B of the 22nd Iowa infantry. He was 36 at time of enlistment. After the battle of Vicksburg he was transferred to the 5th Veteran Reserve Corps in Indianapolis.

John Brooks, an old soldier well-known in Lincoln, was found dead in bed at Firth yesterday morning, where he was temporarily making his home. The old man had been suffering from heart disease for some time past and to this is ascribed his death. His remains were brought to Lincoln today and taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fleming. The time of the funeral will be announced later.

The funeral of John Brooks, the old soldier who died at Firth Saturday night of heart failure, occurred at 2:30 this afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. Fleming, 1612 Q street (sic). The funeral services were conducted by members of the G.A.R.
