Edith Charlotte Schaaf was named for her mother's only sister and her middle name is one of her mother's. The eldest of the four children of Norman Joseph Schaaf (1894-1974) and Alfrieda Charlotte Anna Elizabeth Kirschstein (1894-1994), Edith died at 12 of meningitis. She shares a grave with her youngest sister, Shirley Marie (Annmarie).

Although meningitis claimed her life, Edith had a heart condition - leaky value - that would have not allowed her to live long into adulthood. Because the "treatment" for this condition then was rest and limitation of physical activity, she attended a school for children with special needs, called the Dowling School, in Minneapolis. She rode the bus to school, several miles along the River Road (Mississippi River) from their home at 3434 Humboldt Avenue North, Minneapolis.

Edith was a very affectionate child, and academically accomplished. She took special care of her two younger sisters, Gloria and Shirley. She was best friends with her cousin Caroline Catherine Schaaf and both loved to visit their Schaaf grandparents' farm in Murdock, MN.
