Mr. Calhan was retired from the Indiana Army National Guard as a Sergeant Major, after 40 years of service. He was a resident of New Ross, where he farmed and raised market lambs for many years. He was a member of St.Bernard's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Indiana Sheep Breeders Association, Montgomery County Sheep Association and former president of the National Tunis Sheep Association. He was a former director of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. His other memberships included the Montgomery County Democratic Club, where he served as a precinct committeeman; Eagles; and American Legion. He also was a 4-H leader in Walnut Township for many years.
He was born Aug. 17, 1928, to John H. and Lula J. (Armstrong) Calhan.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret; children, Catherine (Randy) Fischer of Brownsburg, Therese Calhan of Ladoga, Elizabeth (David) Flohr of Ladoga, John (Kelly) Calhan of Zionsville, Colleen Calhan of Chicago; and seven grandchildren.
A brother, Thomas A. Calhan, is deceased.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday in St.Bernard's Catholic Church, 1306 E. Main St. Friend may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday in the church.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
