U.S. Post Office Postmaster
Tom Mulligan was born the 3rd of 6 children. Tom is my Father's older brother. They were very close friends, for as long as Tom was alive.
Tom is the son of George Wm Mulligan and Frances Pulcheria (Wagner) Mulligan. The family moved to Brawley, Imperial Valley, California when Tom was about 8 years old. He lived most of his life in Brawley.
Tom's 3 brothers are,
George Rodrick "Rod" Mulligan born 1915,
James Rollins Mulligan born 1922, and
Anthony "Tony" Virgil Mulligan born 1927.
His 2 sisters are,
Rachel Frances (Mulligan) Stanfield born 1917 and
Mary Ramona (Mulligan) Brand born 1923.
When WWII began, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy. When my dad (Jim) enlisted in the military, he chose the U.S. Navy, because Tom was in the Navy.
After the war was over, Tom returned to the family home in Imperial Valley, CA. Tom and his brother-in-law, Dave Stanfield (Rachel's husband), worked as letter carriers, for the Brawley Post Office. This is where Tom met Mercedes. She had been widowed for some time. They later married and were sweethearts, until her death. Along the way, Mercedes had become the Brawley Postmistress. Some time later, Tom became the Brawley Postmaster, a position he held until he retired.
Tom was a loving husband to Mercedes. In their later years, as Mercedes became ill, Tom lovingly cared for her, until she passed.
Tom had a quick smile for everyone and a great sense of humor. I remember Uncle Tom as a jovial man with a contagious laugh. Tom always loved kids, but sadly he & Mercedes were never blessed with children.
When we were kids, our folks often took us to visit Tom and Mercedes at their vacation home, a mountain cabin. When I was grown, and had children of my own, we were still enjoying visits at the mountain cabin.
Tom treated my children, as if they were his own grandchildren. Every year there was a big rodeo in El Centro. Any time we could get away, we stayed with Tom, so my children could see the rodeo. For city kids, this was a real treat. After Tom retired, even though he lived a 3 hour drive away, he would attend my boy's Little League games a couple of times a month.
Tom later met and married Allene. She had children and grandchildren, all of whom Tom adored. He loved being a grandparent.
My children are grown and raising their own families but they still recount their fond memories of our Uncle Tom. My dad often speaks of his friend and closest brother, Tom.
Thank you Uncle Tom for being the wonderful man that you were. We love you. We'll see you someday, on the other side.
