Surline Asher Winder, 87, of Wapello, died Tues, May 6, 2003, at the Wapello Nursing Home. The daughter of Surl and Myrtle Berner Asher, she was born January 26, 1916, in Jericho, MO. She moved to Louisa County, IA with her father when she was eleven. They lived first in Grandview and then in Wapello. She married Howard L. Winder on August 21, 1946, in the presence of their parents in their home in south Wapello. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1993. Surline graduated from Grandview High School, attended Coe College for two years and taught elementary school for seven years. She was employed for two years at National Bank in Burlington, and owned and operated the Hi-Way Pantry in Wapello for over eight years. After the sale of the Pantry, she returned to school and graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She was a speech pathologist for Louisa-Henry Co for 8 years & at Muscatine County-Mississippi Bend until she retired. She was initiated into P.E.O. in 1942, was a member of the local bridge club, the Wapello Study Club and was a Life Member of the American Speech and Hearing Association. She wintered in Mission, Texas from 1977 until last year. Survived by nieces Karen Humiston of W Des Moines, Kathy Swafford of LeClaire, Shirley Plattenberger of Itasca, Ill., Maryanne Winder of Lithonia, GA, and Ann Schrader of Greeley, CO and two nephews, Craig Winder of Davenport and Tom Plattenberger of Alaska. Step-mother, Marie Otto Asher, brothers, Loren Asher and Emory Asher, three nephews, Eddie Asher and Warren Asher, and Bruce Plattenberger. Burial at Wapello Cemetery with the Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Following services the family gathered at Mrs. Winter's home where they met with friends and served refreshments. From the Burlington Hawkeye, May 7, 2003.
