JONES ELKIN - Lt. Col. Ret. Robert Samuel "Bob" Jones, age 79, of Elkin passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Bob was born December 19, 1930 in Wilkes County to Roland Lee and Ossie Edwards Jones. He was an active member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher for the Bob Jones class for 25 years and was active in the church youth department and meals on wheels. Bob served 22 ½ years in the United States Army and served in Austria, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne and Elkin VFW post 7794 where he served as quartermaster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother. Survivors include his loving wife Colleen Darnell Jones of the home, sons Robert S. "Bobby" Jones of State Road and James Gordon Jones of Thurmond, a daughter Stacey Ann Darnell and husband Donnie of Elkin; brother Roland L. Jones and his wife Lee of Darlington, SC., sister Sarah King of Charlotte; Brothers-in-Law James Darnell of Elkin, James W. Crater and wife Joann of Elkin, and Joseph Price of Bridgewater, VA.; grandchildren Elizabeth Ann Darnell, James Dylan Jones, Joseph Samuel Jones, and Hillary Renee Jones; great grandchild Olyvia Martin and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday, August 30, 2010 at 7 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Blevins and Terry Morris officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A Graveside Service, with full military honors provided by the United States Army, will be conducted Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church, 118 N. Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care kindness always shown.
