Leona Sophia Emma was born July 10, 1916, second daughter of John D. and Anna (Kolling) Schlamann. She was baptized and confirmed that Salem Lutheran Church.

She was married at Salem Lutheran Church Victor Andersen February 20, 1938. This union was blessed with five children. Victor died June 25, 1965.

August 20, 1981, Leona was married to Dick Garrelts of Hastings in the Little Chapel at Good Samaritan Village.

She was a secretary at the Good Samaritan many years. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and one of the church circles.

Survivors are her husband Dick; two sons, Merlyn John and his wife Bonnie of Kearney, Russell and his wife Judy of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Erlene Ann Davis and her husband Stanley of Lincoln, Vicki Lea Brandt and her husband Tom of Pickrell; one step-son, Loren Garrelts of Fairfield; one step-daughter, Mrs. Merna Theis and her husband Pete of College Station, Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Caroline Doering of York, Alice Wilken, Hebron, Esther Schlamann of Superior, Mildred Jensen of Nelson and Fern Schriever of Hastings.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her first husband Victor Andersen, one son James Owen, and one brother Walter.

Services were held Saturday morning in Hastings with the Rev Harry A. Carlsen officiating. Burial was at 2:00 in Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin. Casket bearers were five grandsons, Ryan, Brad and Kris Andersen, Roger Theis, Gary Greer, and Jay Jensen. A lunch was served at Bethany Church after the committal service to relatives and friends. Butler-Volland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
