Dora Charlotte Harris was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, on 5 November 1908, to Burley Milroy Harris, Sr. and Dora Charlotte [McNeill] Harris. She spent her youth in Pennsylvania. In 1924, she went with her Father and oldest Brother Burley Jr, to the Ft. Meyers, Florida area for a time. She married Elmer Hammer 14 May 1927, but later that year, the marriage broke up, and she was sent to Carroll County, Indiana to live with her Father's relatives, Joseph & Laura MaGee. There at Lockport, she gave birth to her only child, Donna May Hammer. Dora was divorced from Elmer in 1929. After that, she located to Lafayette, Indiana, where she married Claude Perry on 24 December 1931. The family lived on North 8th street in Lafayette, where Claude Perry worked at Lobes and later Rifers for several years selling and installing linoleum and other floor coverings. In 1940, the couple opened Perry's Window Shade Shop on the corner of 9th and Main St. in Lafayette, selling linoleum and repairing window shades and venetian blinds, then moving the business in 1946 to the corner of 12th and Main St. in Lafayette.
After Claude Perry's death in 1953, Dora married Harvey Beachy 14 February 1955 and continued to operate the business there until 1988. They also owned and managed apartment rentals at that location and at 6th and New York Streets in Lafayette.
