Princeton-A memorial service for Ira Owen Wade, 86, of 31 Armour Rd., who died Monday in the Merwick Unit at Princeton Medical Center, will be held April 6 at 4 p.m. at Princeton University Chapel. Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery, Meadville, Pa.

Dr. Wade was the founder of Princeton University's Program in European Civilization. An expert on French author, Voltaire, Dr. Wade was one of Princeton's most popular teachers, known for his lively lectures, and constant revamping of yearly courses.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, he received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and began his master's work at Columbia University. A Naval Intelligence Officer during WWI, he continued his studies at Princeton University in 1921, and joined the faculty in 1923. He received his doctorate in 1924. He was chairman of the university's former Department of Modern Languages and Literature, and from 1951 to his retirement in 1965, he operated the university's program in European Civilization.

Dr. Wade received the James Madison Medal in 1981, an award given by Princeton University recognizing an alumnus of the graduate school for distinguishing himself in his profession. He also received the Legion of Honor from the French government in 1956 for his service in furthering the cultural relations between France and the U.S.

Surviving are two nephews, John H. Pond of Littleton, Colo., and Joseph L. Pond of Pittsburgh, Pa.
