Dr. William R. Kirtley, a recipient of the prestigious Banting Medal in recognition of his ground-breaking research in the field of diabetes and metabolism, died at the Preston Health Center at Hilton Head, South Carolina, on August 22, 2010. He was 96.
Dr. Kirtley was associated with Eli Lilly & Company in Indianapolis, Indiana for more than 30 years, where he directed the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research and oversaw the development of a variety of insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents. Widely published in his field, Dr. Kirtley was awarded the Banting Medal of the American Diabetes Association in 1971.
Son of William Raymond Kirtley and Laurel (Miller) Kirtley, and a native of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Dr. Kirtley graduated from Wabash College in 1936, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and from Northwestern University, where he received his medical degree in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, where he was commander of the medical battalion of the American Division in the Philippines. Upon his discharge in February 1946, he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Kirtley was predeceased by his first wife, Faye Marie Kirtley, in 1974. He is survived by his second wife of 34 years, Christina M. Kirtley, of Hilton Head; by his children, William R. Kirtley, Jr. of Indianapolis, and Jane E. Kirtley, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two step-daughters, Toni Barrett Scott of Robinson, Illinois and Aleta Barrett of Burleson, Texas; and two step-grandchildren, Alex Barrett Tadlock and Jacob Tadlock.
