Hayward was a son of Seth Bassett 1715 – 1776 and Mary Hayward Bassett 1718 – 1776 both of Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He was born in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Hayward enlisted at Roxbury, Massachusetts in the spring of 1776 [age 22] in the Connecticut Continental Line. His siblings were Mary Bassett 1738 – Sarah Bassett 1738 – Corp Seth Bassett 1739 – 1833 -Corporal in the Revolutionary War and Zachariah Bassett 1759 – 1853 - Served in the Connecticut Continental Line.
