He was the son of the late James Eddie and Mamie May French. He was the owner of George's Deer Processing and former co-owner of French's Food Market in Tennessee. He was a member of St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church and Oliver Lodge 133 in Swansea; Omega Lodge 536 in Oliver Springs, TN; Knoxville Scottish Rite and Kerbela Shrine Temple of Knoxville.

He was married to the late Brenda J. French. Survivors include his children: Eddie French and his wife, Bonnie; and Michelle Johnson and her husband, Brad, all of Swansea; and Sharon Sturkie and her husband, Dee, of Gaston; grandchildren: Eric Cobia, Tiffany Anderson, Brandi Ray, Crystal French, Steven Spires, and Christopher Sturkie; great-grandchildren: Alexus Ray, and Ethan and Thomas Anderson, and Wyatt Spires; brothers: Gene French, of Knoxville, TN; and Ray French, of Oliver Springs, TN; sisters: Mattie Freeman, Betty Bray, Elaine Johnson, and Lois Yarborough, all of Oliver Springs, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers James D. French and Ronald H. French; and a sister, Shirley Huling.
