The former plumber and nightclub owner, Brinlee had been serving a life sentence for the 1971 contract killing of Fern Bolding of Bristow, OK. Bolding, a teacher, was killed when she tried to start her pickup and it exploded. Bolding's husband, Donald Bolding, had been scheduled to testify against Brinlee, who was accused at the time of stealing a pickup in Tulsa County. Although Brinlee allegedly had boasted of arranging the killing, he later denied it. The first time Brinlee escaped was during a July 1973 riot at the prison. He was captured six weeks later in Biloxi, Miss. Brinlee escaped again in 1976 with six other inmates via a utility tunnel. He surrendered just a few days later to an off-duty prison guard in a grocery store in Canadian, OK.
