William H. (Buck) Berger, 75, a retired employee of Hough Manufacturing Corp., died Friday afternoon December 4, on arrival at Mercy Hospital where he was taken after becoming ill while shoveling snow at his home 424 E. Centerway. He had been in failing health for several months.
Mr. Berger was a well known as a baseball player in Janesville during his early life. He played with teams in the old Industrial League and later with the Janesville city teams including the Janesville Janes.
As a young man he became an employee of the Parker Pen Co. He was with Parker Pen for 37 years, most of that time as a foreman. After leaving Parker Pen he joined the Hough Corp. where he remained until his retirement in 1956.
Born in Stoughton on November 6th, 1889 he was the son of August and Wilhelmina Steffen Berger. The family located to Janesville when he was a boy. He married Pear McCarthy in Rockford, IL on October 22, 1913.
Mr. Berger was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 53
Surviving are his wife: two sons, Ronald A., Pontiac, MI and Richard F., South Milwaukee, WI; two daughters, Mrs. Keith L. Long, Milford, UT and Mrs. Allen L. Behling, Evansville, WI; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother Harry E. Berger, Janesville; and a sister, Mrs. Lyle Graves. Janesville.
A son Robert died in 1929.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday December 8th, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Rev. DarVriesman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Overton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday
