PFC Brownell served with the US Army, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.
After entering the service, Claude was sent overseas and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He trained with that unit for and embarked with that unit for the amphibious assault on Hitler's "fortress Europe". He was killed in action that day, 6 Jun 1944, on the beach near Vierville-sur-mer.
