Gunner's Mate Second Class, USS Barr (DE 576), US Navy. Son of Meredith Brady and Valeria A. (Gross) Brady; husband of Louise H. Brady. Entered the service from Pennsylvania. Killed in action. He was serving on the destroyer escort USS Barr (DE 576) northeast of the Canary Islands when the hunter-killer group the Barr was part of was attacked by the German sub U-549 on May 29, 1944. The U-boat sank the group's carrier, the USS Block Island (CVE 21), and severely damaged the Barr with an acoustic torpedo before being sunk by the USS Eugene E. Elmore (DE 686) and the USS Ahrens (DE 575). Brady died of his injuries the day after the attack and was buried at sea.
