Robert Emmett was called Emmett by his family. He was born in Georgia in 1869, the first child of Robert William and Sarah Jane Barr Whorton. When he was about 11 years of age, his family moved to Navarro County Texas. He had four sisters, Elizabeth "Bettie", Mamie, Frances "Fannie", and Annie: one brother, James Barr Whorton: and one half brother, Sylvanius Bryant Gibson. His mother died 13 Feb 1879 and his father died 13 Jan 1884. He was raised by his aunt, Annie Whorton Goss. He married Ruby Kilpatrick the 7th of June 1893 in Navarro Co Tx and they had 7 children: Lurline, Velma, Edna, Robert, Ruth, Clara and Joe. He was a lifelong farmer in Navarro Co. He died 24 Sep 1928 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery with his grandparents and uncle. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and they put a monument on his grave. Ruby died 1962 and was buried beside him.
