Charles Bonnel was born in Bartholomew county, Indiana in 1833, the son of William S. Bonnel and Catherine Shell. He married Married Mary Catherine Shouse at Platte county, Missouri on October 4, 1859. The Bonnels farmed in the Monrovia/Noffsinger community and were the parents of 15 children.

Several auto loads from Effingham attended the funeral of Chas. Bonnell at the home of his daughter Mrs. John Henry. Rev. Rupert had charge of the services and interment was made in the Noffsinger cemetery. Mr. Bonnell was nearly 86 years of age. He had lived in Atchison county fifty-seven years. Since the death of his wife sixteen years ago, he has lived with his children, who are Charles, in Oklahoma: John, Ben, Henry, near Monrovia; Mrs. John Henry, Monrovia: Mrs. Eva Whitaker, Nortonville: Mrs. Homer Pitman, Effingham: Mrs. Laura Butler, Kansas City: Mrs. J. R. Freeland, Kingman, Kans., and Mrs. Art Beach, Colorado. Four granddaughter, Mildred Pittman, Melinda Bonnell, Catharine and Bertha Henry are students of A. C. H. S. By honesty and industry, the deceased accumulated quite a little wealth. He decided he would enjoy seeing his family derive the benefit from it, hence the division of his property was made several years ago and each child was given either and 80 acres or its equivalent in money. The very large funeral was evidence of the fact he was held in high esteem by a large number of friends.
