Donald was the oldest son of Charles K. Hanes and his wife, Opha D. Kincade. Don married Gertrude A. Mielke (daughter of Carl Mielke and Ida Just) on September 12, 1924 in Wheaton (DuPage County), Illinois. They had one son Charles Hanes (1927-1991). Don died a prisoner of war at Fukuoka Camp #1 in Japan.

Capt. Donald L. Hanes was an Illinois National Guardsman called to federal duty as a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He was involved in some of the first tank battles of WWII. During his time on Bataan, he was transferred to Hq Company. He became a Japanese Prisoner of War when Bataan surrendered on April 9, 1942. he took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He was wounded when the Japanese "hell ship" the Brazil Maru was bombed by Americna fighter bombers while docked at Hong Kong. He and the other surviving POWs were put on the Enoura Maru and taken to Japan. He died of his wounds on February 5, 1945. After the war his remains were returned to the United States. Since he is buried in a mass grave, the government selected Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for burial.
