Born to James Madison How(e) and Fatima K. Blackmer How(e), Lois Rosilla was the 8th of 9 children born. Her parents were some of the earliest settlers in the Beaver Dam, Wisconsin area, helping to organize the Baptist Church, including the holding of the initial meetings in their log house for several months.

In 1875, Lois married Charles Harvey Smith, originally of New York. Together, they had 10 or 11 children. Around 1885, Harvey and Lois Smith moved from Beaver Dam to Milwaukee where they resided until their deaths in 1916 and 1933, respectively. They were then buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery in Beaver Dam, Dodge, Wisconsin.
