Dr. Richard Dean Korns (May 01, 1921 - March 16, 2009)
Richard Dean Korns, 87, long time resident and pediatric dentist of Joplin, passed away in his home after an illness on Monday, March 16, 2009. He was born May 1, 1921, in Unionville, Mo., to Marion Dorwin and Gladys Dooley Korns. After graduating from high school in Kirksville, Mo., in 1938. He attended Northeast Missouri State University before entering Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis, Mo. He married Betty Ann Eubank on June 24, 1943. She preceded Richard in death, passing away on Oct. 18, 1970. Following graduation from Washington University School of Dentistry in 1943, Richard served on active duty as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He completed reserve duty and retired as a Commander from USNR Dental Corps. In April of 1946, Richard entered into private practice of pediatric dentistry in Joplin. He retired in February of 1990. Richard was always active in organized dentistry. He was a member of the Southwest Missouri Dental Society, Missouri Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He served on the Board of Governors of the Missouri Dental Association for many years and was a delegate to four sessions of the American Dental Association. As the president of both the Southwest Missouri Dental Association and the Missouri Dental Association, he made notable contributions to the profession. He was recognized as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Also, he was a member of the American Society of Dentistry for children and a past president of the Washington University Dental Alumni Association. Recently, he received the lifetime achievement award from the American College of Dentists Foundation. Richard was active in Joplin civic organizations as a board member of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce, the United Fund and Rotary Club. Also, he was a past president of the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club and the Joplin Little Theatre. As a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, he served in the vestry for many years, was a lay leader and held the position of Senior Warden for two terms. On July 14,1975, he married Margaret Jean Morgenthaler Wilson also from Joplin. The two of them spent 33 years enjoying their family and being active in civic and social organizations in Joplin. She survives. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Katherine Wilson DeTar. In addition to his surviving wife, also surviving are three children and their spouses, Richard Eubank and Jan (Jones) Korns, of St. Louis, Mo., John Barry and Pam (Riggs) Korns, of San Felipe, Mexico, Ann Korns and J. Michael Gunn, of St. Louis; two stepsons, W. Wallace and Ann (Ryan) Wilson, of Kansas City, Mo., Andrew and Coleen (Kluba) Wilson, of Joplin; 14 grandchildren, Ty Korns, Megan Korns Russell, Jake Korns, Kristen Korns Balac, Richie Korns, Jean Gunn White, Sheryl Gunn Quevedo, Amanda DeTar, Josh DeTar, Katie DeTar, Wallace Wilson, Katie Jones Bell, Eddie Wilson and Evan Wilson; and 11 great-grandchildren, Kea Smith, Zach Brown, Alec Korns, Wade Korns, Courtney Washick, Brandon Balac, Grace Wilson, Wally Wilson, Katherine Schaefer, Zoe Bell, and Wyatt Grace DeTar. Visitation time with the family is planned for Thursday, March 19, at Thornhill-Dillon Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church on Friday, March 20. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice.
