Based in Edmonton, Alberta. He was serving with 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Spr Collier was was killed after an improvised explosive device detonated during a foot patrol in the village of Nakhonay in the Panjwai district, about 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City.
Aged 24, he was born in Toronto and grew up in Bradford, Ontario. He worked for a greenhouse and as a landscaper before joining the military three years ago in December 2007. Spr Collier deployed in May 2010 on his first operational tour of duty. He had narrowly escaped death in a previous IED strike earlier in this tour and fought hard to rejoin his comrades. A senior commander described him as having an easygoing nature and a great sense of humour, and was known for his devotion, his enthusiasm and his technical abilities. He was also an automobile enthusiast who who enjoyed his Audi and was always tinkering with it. He loved sports and his favourites included hockey, baseball, rugby, whitewater rafting, snowboarding and skydiving.
Spr Collier leaves behind his mother Carol, father Jim, younger sisters Shannon, Jennine and Lauren, grandmothers Anne Marie Collier and Freda McFadden, other family members and many friends. Predeceased by grandfathers Bill Collier and Gordon McFadden. Sadly missed by his dog Tinkerbell.
Funeral with full military honours was held on July 29, 2010 at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church, Bradford.
Canada has now lost 151 military personnel since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. One diplomat, a journalist and two aid workers have also died.
