Rites Sunday For 3rd Victim Of Accident

VAIDEN, Miss. (Special) -

Services for Alf Trotter Collins, 50, are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Vaiden Baptist Church with burial in Garden of Memory Cemetery in Winona, Lee Funeral Home in charge.

Collins died Friday in a Winona hospital from injuries received Thursday in an automobile accident on Highway 51 near Winona that claimed two other lives.

A native of Winona, he was employed by the J.A. Olson Picture Frame Company there.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Juanita Hambrick Collins; one son, Roney [sp] B. [sp] Collins, both of Vaiden; four brothers, Joe M., Nick, and L.T. Collins, all of Winona, and L.R. Collins of Grenada; and two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Mae Hays and Mrs. Susie Ellen Richards, both of Paducah, Ky.

Alf Trotter Collins (05/22/1913 – 01/24/1964), was one of the eight children of Major Robert "Bob" Collins (01/15/1872 – 01/11/1945) and Erma Rodgers Collins (02/14/1878-10/04/1953) of Winona. Alf was killed in an automobile accident while enroute to work at the J.A. Olsen Company in Winona, MS. He was 50 years, 8 months, and 1 day old at his death. The Collins family included: Joe Marlow (12/31/1897 – 06/17/1966), Ladell Small (Dell) (10/05/1900 – 08/30/1949), Lottie Mae (02/05/1902 – 03/21/1997), Lattie Rodgers ("Doc") (04/28/1905 – 08/07/1977), Lay Turner (10/20/1907 – 02/28/1985), Nick Pegues (06/13/1910 – 02/07/1999), Alf Trotter (05/22/1913 – 01/24/1964), and Susie Ellen (11/27/1915 - 12/11/2007).

After receiving the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal, my father (Alf Trotter) was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946, where he served in the Military Police and was classified as Marksman, M-1 Rifle.

Alf married Juanita Elizabeth Hambrick (10/12/1920 - 07-01-2002) on March 11, 1953. They had one son, Ronnie Lee Collins.

Alf was employed by the J.A. Olsen Company in Winona for many years and was one of four involved in an automobile accident en-route to work on January 23, 1964. He died the next day. He was a devoted father and loved his family. He is missed every day, and every time my heart beats. Dad, I LOVE YOU.

Two Killed In Crash At Winona

Two men were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 51 about three miles South of Winona this morning about 6:30 and four other men were admitted to the Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona for treatment.

Investigating officers said that a car occupied by Johnson Cook, about 42, Steven Downs, 60, Alf Collins, 60, and Avery Peeler, also 60, all of Vaiden and a feed truck driven by Travis O. Evans of Morton hit head on. The car then side-swiped a truck owned by Complete Auto Transit Incorporated driven by Billy Bassham of Jackson who was traveling behind the Evans truck. The truck driven by Evans ran off into a creek and Evans was pinned under the cab. The other truck hit the bridge abutment.

Killed in the accident were Cook and Downs, Bassham was treated for a knee injury and released. Collins, Peeler, and Evans are still in the hospital, said authorities.
