Elizabeth (Betty) Noel George Cantrell, 85 passed away on Jan 24th, 2010.

She was born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada to the late Richard and Elsie George. Betty grew up in St. John's Newfoundland and graduated from Bishop Spencer College.

Elizabeth Florence (George) Cantrell was one of a twin. Her twin sister Elsie Patricia Cron George died Dec. 22, 1924 at just 3 days old. She is buried at St. Peter's Anglican Cemetery in Harbour Grace, South Side, Newfoundland, Canada.

During WWII, the activated GA National Guard Artillery Unit from Cobb County was stationed on Signal Hill in St. Johns. Betty met Henry Edward Cantrell on a blind date, and they soon became engaged. As soon as the war was over, Betty flew to Georgia, and they were married on Sunday Oct 20th, 1945 by Rev. Autry in the Smyrna Baptist Parsonage.

Henry had built a small house on Love Street behind the home of his parents, Duff and Effie Cantrell. In 1950 he built a house on South Cobb Drive. They were charter members of St Jude's Episcopal Church and very active in the Smyrna American Legion. They were also members on the Smyrna Oakdale Moose Lodge where Betty served as Senior Regent.

They owned and operated Cantrell's Upholstery Company, specializing in antique furniture. They did furniture for the GA Governor's Mansion and the Chandler House. In 1971, they sold their property on South Cobb Drive to the developers of the now Emory Adventist Hospital and purchased a farm in Ranger, GA.

They were Charter Members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Calhoun. Betty was a wonderful hostess, cook and homemaker. Always artistic, she loved to paint, sew, and make all kinds of crafts. She was well known for her many pairs of colorful shoes and matching handbags.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Cantrell, brother William George and nephew Boyd George. She will be greatly missed by her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Barry Smith of Cramerton, NC and Margaret and Greg Caudle of Canton, GA. She leaves four grandchildren, Heather Smith, Eric and Stephanie Smith, Austin and Allison Caudle, and Michael and Carrie Caudle, and five great grandchildren, Savannah and Connor Smith, Madeleine and Norah Caudle and Sydney Caudle.

Betty returned to Smyrna in 2008, residing at Del Mar Gardens. The family would like to thank the staff there and at Emory Adventist Hospital. The family will receive friends at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna on Tuesday January 26 from 5-8. A reception will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 224 Trammell, Calhoun, GA at 11am with the service following at 12 noon Wed January 27. Burial will be at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta GA. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Timothy's Church, 224 Trammell, Calhoun, GA.
