Her maiden name was Katherine, Sophia Schmidt whose home was in Hanover, Germany, but who, on account of the poor financial situation of the family, made her home with her mother's sister, a Mrs. Christoph Gross, in Hanover, who also had a daughter of the same age and name, but who had passed away while a child. My mother was adopted and raised by her Aunt. Her husband was born in April 1801 and she was born in September 1805. They were very religious and God fearing people. They were married in 1832. They attended church regularly and insisted on their children doing the same. Each morning my Sophia would read a Bible passage and sing a religious hymn. They had a very happy married life. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, three sons and four daughters, whose names were in order as follows: Friedericka, Dorethea, Heinrich, Christoph, August (died at 4 months prior to departing Germany), Sophia, and Maria (the last two being born in America).
