Sarah Ellen Hillis was born on Feb 12, 1862, in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana, to parents George Baker Hillis, born in Indiana (1828-1899), and Elizabeth A. Scobee, born in Kentucky (1837-1907).
Sarah was the third child in a family of six children, all born in Indiana. Her brothers and sisters were: Mary Jane Hillis-Flint (1858-1928), William Allen Hillis (1860-), Emma Elizabeth Hillis-Browning (1866-1936), George Henry Hillis (1870-1935), and Margaret Mae Hillis-O'Hair (1872-1930).
On Dec 19, 1895, in Putnam County, Sarah married Joseph Milton Allen, born in Indiana (1853-1928). Joseph was a son of William Wallace Allen (1826-1890), and Mary Ann Evans (1828-1902), both born in Kentucky.
