Graveside rites Friday for Dr. Carl M. Richter
Funeral services were being held this Wednesday in California for Dr. Carl. M. Richter who died unexpectedly Monday at his Orland, Calif home. He was 50.
Members of the Richter family planned to fly from California to Pennsylvania Thursday for graveside rites at Elizabethville. Time of the graveside service was not know.
He was born in Halifax and was a graduate of Elizabethville High School.
Funeral arrangements were being made by the immediate family, according to word received her by former neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. H. Dale Wolfe. Dr. Richter is survived by his wife, the former Anna Mae Uhler, of Elizabethville, and two children, Edward, 21, and Mary Ann, 19.
He received the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from the Universality of Pennsylvania in 1937 and began that year to practice in the Newville area. He served with the rank of major in the US Army, including two years service in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He was a charter member and past commander of Hamilton-Myers Post 6070 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Newville. He was also a member of the American Legion, Masons, Consistory, Shrine, National Sojourners and Eagles.
Dr. Richter was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had served on the Church Council and as a Sunday School Teacher.
He served on the Newville Borough Council and for 12 years as chairman of the Newville Water Authority. He had been a candidate for the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Cumberland County prothonotary and for 19th District congressman. He had also served the state Bureau of Animal Industry.
In 1969 he accepted a position with the state of California and he and his family left from the home at 10 Chestnut St. for the West Coast. "Doc" Richter was well known in Cumberland, York, Adams, Fulton, Juniata and Mifflin counties where he tested herds in his veterinary work.
He was, also, known for his zest and enthusiasm and friendly manner, his ideas on almost any subject and interest in all fields. He was particularly fond of Newville and gave many volunteer hours to serving the borough and its organizations. He was interested in politics, national and local, and above all, "Doc" Richter was colorful.
