Franklin Howard Kahle was a successful farmer and business owner. His parents were Jacob Weiser Kahle and Rose Ellen Reed. He owned several farms in Clarion County, the first new car dealership in the county and created the Kahle Coal Company, for which several of his sons worked. He and his wife, Alice Stover, had eight children. Seven survived childhood. He took pride in being a direct descendant of Conrad Weiser. He did not use the suffix, "Sr." in his name.
