Frank Mott was an attorney in Jamestown and active in New York politics. In addition, while he was preparing for the practice of law, he work for two newspapers in Western New York, the Jamestown Morning News and the Buffalo Times. He was political editor of the latter during the 1900 presidential election. "History of Chautauqua County, New York, and its people" edited by Andrew Young, called him "one of the leading Democrats of Western New York." In 1902 he was defeated in his run for New York Secretary of State. In December of 1906 he was appointed as a Deputy Attorney General for New York State. In 1920 he ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for New York Attorney General. Mr. Mott's name is repeated in many published sources as an influential person in the early life and career of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert H. Jackson. Indeed, Mr. Jackson apprenticed in Mr. Mott's Jamestown law office.
