Capt. William Durand Bogart was born in Granville Nova Scotia Canada. He was the son of Capt. and Mrs John Henry Bogart. His parents had five children all sons. William was the second son.
William's father Capt. John Henry sailed "The St. Patrick" a Tall Merchant ship all over the world. He died off the coast of Holland but not from a shipping accident. His oldest son Eugene was with him aboard ship. Three out of Five of the Bogart sons would become Sea Captains sailing across the globe.
A few years after William's father's death, his oldest Brother Capt. Eugene Bogart was lost at sea off the coast of South America. Shortly after these two deaths William married Ida Miller. She was also from Nova Scotia. Her family were farmers. William and Ida had one child a daughter named Kate.
When Kate was 11 the Bogart family immigrated from Nova Scotia to Fernandina. Capt. William Bogart purchased a Merchant Shipping Company. They originally lived on 9th street and later moved to 4th street. Kate and Ida sailed often with Captain Bogart. Also living in the same area was another child named Kate Bogart Wass. She is often confused with Kate Bogart the sea captain's daughter. The families probably knew each other well. Several Kate Bogart records, photos and sources are tangled between the two Kates. (Amelia Island History Museum)
Kate his daughter married a local citizen of Fernandina Haynes Mahoney. The Museum has a copy of their wedding invitation. Six months after her Wedding Kate Bogart Mahoney died of typhoid while visiting Brooklyn New York. She was visiting relatives who might have possibly hired Typhoid Mary as a cook in their home. This has not been proven.
Kate's body was shipped from New York back to Fernandina for burial in St. Peter's cemetery. Special caution had to be taken when shipping a body with typhoid. It is not clear who was with Kate when she died.
After the death of their Daughter Ida and William Bogart remained in Fernandina until Capt. Bogart's death. Prior to his death they built a large home at 509 Centre Street. (the home no longs exists) They were very close to William's nephew John Bogart and his wife Ruby. This nephew was around the same age as Kate and was living in Leon Florida. The nephew died suddenly and is buried here in St. Peter's cemetery. After his death Ruby his wife lived with William and Ida until the Captain's death.
After Capt. Bogart died Ida returned to her home in Nova Scotia Canada. She allowed Ruby to remain in the home on Center street and use the home as a boarding house. This provided income for the young widow.
Ida died at the age of 99 in Canada.(20 years after she had returned home) Her body was buried in the Miller family Plot in Riverside Cemetery in Canada. She has a memorial in this cemetery between her daughter and husband. It is believed that this is only a memorial stone. At this time no information or proof has been located to indicate that Ida's body was returned to Fernandina for burial.
Ruby Bogart died a few months prior to Ida. She died in Fernandina and is buried beside her husband John Bogart. This was the last "Bogart" family member from this line to live in Fernandina. Ida left all of her estate to nieces and nephews in her hometown of Canada.
