Erwin Ernest Poss was born on July 28, 1923 in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois, a son of Ernie Earnest Poss and Lorraine Ella Sackett Poss.

He lived in Lebanon, Illinois with his parents until 1935 then moved to Highland, Madison Illinois, receiving his education in the local schools. He married Ellen Anna Larsen in March 1941 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Two Children were born to them, Lorraine Laura Poss and Karen Sue Poss both of Highland, Illinois.

Erwin Poss served in the Army Air Force during World War II. The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was the military aviation arm of the United States of America during and immediately after the war, it was a component of the United States Army. On February 23, 1947 Erwin Poss was honorable discharged from the United States Army. He went on to continue service in the United States Air Force until he was honorable discharged on March 8, 1951.

On February 15, 1957, he married Verdi again in Beaumont, Texas where he worked for 15 months as a welder for the Beaumont Construction Company. At 3:15 p.m. on November 29, 1957 while working at the Olin Mathieson Chemical Company, Erwin Poss collapsed and died suddenly of a heart attack. Erwin Poss is buried in the Highland City Cemetery in Highland, Madison County, Illinois.

In April 2006, one of Erwin's two children, Karen Sue (Poss) Boyd, contacted the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri to inquire about her father's military service. On April 17, 2006 the NPRC responded with a letter stating that due to a disastrous fire that occurred on July 12, 1973 to the centers records storage, most of Erwin's military records were destroyed along with approximately 16 – 18 million Official Military Personnel Records from 1912 to 1960, his enlistment date remains unknown.
