|This is a picture of Joe Lovitto (my sister's late husband) with the great Ted Williams. Joe was the #1 draft pick in 1969 right out of high school where he attended in San Pedro, California. Ted Williams drafted him for the Washington Senators who later became the Texas Rangers. Ted Williams is reported to have said that Joe would be the next Mickey Mantle. Joe was plagued by injuries early in his career and so never achieved his full potential. A story was told at Joe's funeral about his days playing with Ted. Ted had written a book on baseball and was known to refer to his book often and drill his players on certain chapters after games & practice sessions. He would ask them if they had read a certain chapter that dealt with mistakes or weaknesses in their playing. One day, Ted asked Joe if he had a read a certain chapter of his book and after a long pause, Joe said to Ted, "Hell, Ted I didn't even know you wrote a book". This was so typical of Joe's sense of humor.|
