Henry was born circa 1833 in New York City, the son of Nathaniel & Henrietta (Seaman) Holmes. He served during the civil war as 2nd Sgt., in D company, 84th Regt., N.Y.S.V. (14th Regt., N.Y.S.M.). Henry was wounded in battle and captured. He served the remainder of the war in Libby prison. While at Libby prison his 1st Sgt., Tolin Vliet was promoted. Henry would normally have been elevated to 1st Sargeant. I haven't found any record of that, other then an autobiography by his son, which referred to Henry as "Sergeant Major."

Henry is listed in the 1897 Brooklyn city directory - so I assume he was still living, but the 1900 census, dated June 11, 1900, shows his 2nd wife as a widow. Henry was divorced from his 1st wife, so I have to assume he was buried with his 2nd wife, Mary, and several of their children, Arthur and Charles who are known to be buried at Cypress Hills.

There is a death record for a Henry Holmes (b. ca. 1838) who died in Kings County July 6, 1897. This may be him.
Update: Carolina Padin of Cypress Hills confirms that Henry Holmes was buried July 7, 1897 in "Gr. 100, Cypress Knolls" with Mary L. Holmes who was buried with him on May 20, 1919.
