A former Monroe County man drowned while swimming in Lake Michigan south of Ludington.

The Oceana County Sheriff's Office reported that William R. Iott, 25, of Durand, formerly of Temperance, was swimming with friends on the Fourth of July while he was camping at Silver Lake State Park.

Lt. Craig Mast said the friends were between sand bars when Mr. Iott began to struggle and disappeared in about seven to eight feet of water. A human chain of volunteers was formed to help search for the victim, Lt. Mast said.

"They tried to make a rescue, but it was to no avail," he said.
