LaSurs, who first enlisted in January 1862 as a surrogate volunteer for Jacob Weston, was discharged a year after fighting while holding the rank of private. He re-enlisted in Co. G., 30th Regiment of Illinois at Vicksburg, Mississippi and was discharged with his company in July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, then holding the rank of corporal.

After his death in 1907, his wife Catherine E. received a pension of $12 a month under the Pension Act of June 1890. In October of 1917 that pension was increased to $25 a month.
