Samuel Moat was born April 22, 1839 in Temple Patrick County Antrim Ireland the son of Margaret Reid and William Moat. They later moved to Ballynadrentraugh which was just a little way from Temple Patrick.His father was a farmer and blacksmith. Samuel was a brother to Hannah Moat Nixon, William, Robert and Alexander Moat. He was educated at Mr. O Fallon's school Just down the road from the family home. Samuel's mother died in 1842. The father and sons moved to America after her death. Hannah followed in 1860 after her marriage. Samuel married Nellie Devery Jan 17, 1867 in Chicago, Illinois. They lived in Sumner Twp. Kankakee, Illinois. He and Nellie were the parents of Margaret, Edward, Robert,Samuel I.,William A. and Barbara. They moved to South Dakota where Nellie died and he later married Alwida Robinson on July 27, 1887 . Samuel died July 16, 1915 in Hand County South Dakota.
