When young man, he made an overland trip to California and visited the Pacific Coast. He returned by water, crosssed the Ismathus and landed in New York. In 1854 he married Anna Black Moore in Iowa City, Iowa. They had 6 children. In 1869, his wife died and he married Elizabeth Evans Grant. They had 2 children.
He was an intelligent man, did his own thinking and was possessed of a wonderful memory. He was a successful business man. His bible was much read and familiar to him.
He died on June 25, 1896. The funeral services were held from his residence southwest of town. He was burried in Center Grove Cemetery.
