He served during World War II as an infantry machine gunner with the rank of Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 289th Infantry, 75th Division in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded on December 26, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart Medal. After returning from the hospital, he participated in the Battle for the Colmar Pocket, the Battle for the Ruhr, and the final attack for Germany.

From 1950 to 1954, he was a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's United States Air Force.
