Lois Hepburn was the daughter of Oliver Westover Hepburn and Nora Jane (Estes) Hepburn. She married Thomas Eugene "Gene" Arnhart. He was the son of Thomas Arnhart and Pearl Mae (Brown) Arnhart. As of 10-01-10, the memorial for Gene Arnhart incorrectly lists his date of death as February 11th. According to his Oregon State Death records, Gene Arnhart died on February 1st, 1997 in Multnomah County, Oregon. The correct February 1 date is also confirmed on his grave marker

August 4, 1915—June 21, 2010


Lois Arnhart died surrounded by her children.

She was born to Oliver and Nora Hepburn in Joseph and attended school on the Divide.

Lois lived in Joseph most of her life.

She is remembered as a great storyteller and historian of the Wallowa County area.

She also enjoyed poetry and reading and could recite poetry that she had learned as a small child.

She and her late husband, Gene, loved to travel and camp on Jaynes Ridge. The couple wintered in Arizona.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Gene.

She is survived by sons, Don Arnhart and his wife Janice of Joseph, Cliff Arnhart and his wife Shirley of Hesperia, Calif.; daughters, Bobbi Chitwood and her husband Harold of Imnaha, Sharon Fisher and her husband Jim of Granbury, Texas; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her "extended family" of residents of the Alpine House.

A celebration of life is planned for 11 a.m., June 26, at the American Legion Hall in Joseph.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Alpine House in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

Note: In addition to her husband, Lois Arnhart was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law. Carol Arnhart was the first wife of her son Donald, and is also buried in this cemetery.
