Henry Martin left his home in England when he was 14 years old. Finding employment at his young age must have been difficult but he was given a job on a freighter ship where he lived and worked for 4 years. He learned many things during the years aboard ship and spent most of his spare time reading and studying. Since the freighters cargo was primarily horses, one of the main things he learned was the blacksmith trade. He could turn a worn horseshoe into a near work of art. At age 18 Henry left what family he may have had in England and made his way to America. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge and was also a drum major. He married Sarah Elizabeth Butler in 1856 in Kentucky. They moved to Lineville, Iowa in about 1866, then to Texas in 1892. Henry was a short man and quick tempered. His daughter Mary said they would have to laugh at the way he talked. He said once he was building his house and had it finished all but the hell, (meaning the L shaped room addition). After the death of Sarah in 1902, Henry married again (name unknown). It was an unhappy marriage. He was 74 years old, rude and rough and just couldn't get along with his second wife. He would walk out and go to his son John Allen Martin's house with his Bible and a bottle of whisky to stay with him overnight.
